Grade meetings in May
Following my return from the UK, I am happy to say that our teacher team is growing. Remember, school term begins August 22, 2011. Mark your calendars and start the countdown to when you join our brand new school for your educational development.
Each child should receive a letter providing feedback from our March workshop days. For those of you who were unable to attend the workshop meetings, don’t worry, we will be inviting you to the school so you may participate in these activities too.
For now, I would also like to extend an invitation to all students and parents to the school for an evening meeting with the grade groups after the Easter break. This will allow us to meet with you again and take the opportunity to update you on the schools progress.
The evenings are posed as follows:
Grade 4&5: Tuesday May 3, 18:00-19:00
Grade 6&7: Wednesday May 4, 18:00-19:00
Grade 8&9: Thursday May 5, 18:00-19:00
On board with Grades 6-9
On Saturday 26th March we welcomed grades 6-9 (Middle school) with their parents for a workshop day in our school. Again our aula was filled with parents and enthused young future leaders wanting to get a taste of being an IES student. Our teachers for the day, Ms Grees, Mr Sheu and Mr Hedgepeth, worked through activities in English, Swedish and Maths with the children. We also had additional help from Ms Allen and Ms Rouzbahani who mingled with parents over refreshments. I would like to thank each and every single student of the day for working diligently with your individual tasks and for also working well within your groups. It is going to be a joy to have you return in the early fall.
When the school opens, Grades 6-9 will be in a separate wing of the school than the junior students. Our renovations are on the go to ensure that our school will provide a milieu for our devoted subject teachers in the middle school to offer our older students a safe and academically challenging environment.
Please feel free to contact me or Norma Aznar if you have any questions.
Welcome Grades 4 and 5
On Saturday 19th March we welcomed grade 4s and 5s (Junior school) with their parents to a workshop day in our school. It was wonderful to see so many new and bright smiling faces filling our aula. Each child was able to experience what it is like to be a young student within IES. Our teachers for the day, Ms Larsson, Mr Henningsson and Ms Clefberg, worked through activities in English, Swedish and Maths with the children, who were all so enthusiastic with the tasks set before them. Congratulations to each and every one of you for joining us and for doing your best. I am very proud of you and cant wait to see you in our classrooms in the fall.
When the school opens, Grades 4 and 5 will be in a separate wing of the school than the older students in our building. We are in the process of renovating classrooms so dedicated teachers can offer our young students a safe and academic environment. We will have a home classroom teacher for our grades 4 and 5.
Progression in the building, junior club, teachers and future activities for the students will be updated via the web. Please do not hesitate to contact me or Norma Aznar if you need more information.
Information from the Principal
Here I stand with the keys to the entrance of IES Uppsala. Yes, I am now permanently based at the school, which gives me the opportunity to watch the metamorphosis of the current building into that of our school. More importantly, I am available to answer any queries that you as parents or students may have. As the building is well into its construction phase, if you would like to meet with me in person, I ask that you please contact me prior to visiting.
Keep your eye on this page for updates on the schools progress!
Up and coming events for March:
WORKSHOP DAYS:
We are excited about the new students who will be joining us in August. Students that have been accepted into the school (so far) have been invited to attend a workshop day. This event will take place at the school, Genetikvägen 5, Uppsala. There will be two separate days.
SATURDAY 19TH MARCH:
09.00 - 12.00 Grade 4
13.00 - 16.00 Grade 5
SATURDAY 26TH MARCH:
09.00 - 12.00 Grade 6
13.00 - 16.00 Grade 7-9
The aim of the day is to let students experience what it is like to be an IES student. They will line up for lessons, and be guided in activities in English, Swedish and Mathematics by experienced teachers in these subjects from our closest IES neighbors in Gävle.
Whilst the students are busy with their activities, parents are invited to stay for a discussion with myself and personnel from IES.
A letter from the Principal
I am delighted to be appointed principal of IES in Uppsala. Our school is placed in the green, booming area of Ultuna. My vision is to develop a strong scientific profile for IESU and to ensure that each child be seen as an individual and to be given the opportunity to excel at their level of competence.
Why science you may ask? Well, science is exciting! It is awe-inspiring, fun and creative. Science impacts our daily lives, our long-term health and well-being, our children, the policies and decisions that affect our society and the world we live in. To succeed in the modern world, it is important to be able to communicate, think critically and be innovative. Such skills are the cornerstone of the scientific process. By implementing a science profile at IESU, our students will be taught to problem solve in a social setting, be creative, to not be afraid to question and critically evaluate any situation. This will encourage them to be free-thinking and to make informed decisions that impact their own life.
As I take on this new endeavor, I will bring with me my energetic, positive personality and my professional experience. I have more than ten years of biomedical research practice in academia and scientific institutes. As a young woman working in such a competitive and international milieu, I have learned the importance of fostering a constructive work environment where pupils and instructors alike can be open-minded and fearless of facing challenges head-on. On a personal level, I have an international background and I have experienced the transition of moving from one country to another as a child, adult and professional. I understand the needs and fears involved in such transitions. I am curious by nature and my curiosity keeps leading me down new paths, moving me forward, and opening up new doors.
I look forward to this new venture and its challenges and hope to see you and your children soon as I open the doors of our new school in August.
With kind regards,
Dr Rachel Heimeier

Internationella Engelska Skolan – Your Choice for Success
We are pleased to inform you that Internationella Engelska Skolan (IES) will be opening a new school in Uppsala in August of 2011, for grades 4-9.
IES is one of Sweden´s leading independent schools (friskolor), with a clear focus on quality education. We are experienced in operating schools and are specialized in teaching and learning during the formative teenage years. IES was founded in 1993 and has since grown to include 17 schools around Sweden, with more than 9000 students in total. The company is led by experienced educators. We have top middle schools in Bromma, Enskede, Täby, Nacka, Järfälla, Eskilstuna, Örebro, Linköping, Jönköping, Göteborg, Borås, Karlstad, Gävle and Sundsvall but have not until now found a suitable building for Uppsala.
The Uppsala school will be located at what is now called "Genetikcentrum" at Ultuna. Here, the most exiting expansion in Uppsala is planned for the coming years, with billions invested in the Ultuna university campus and a whole new town emerging. Given the location and the exquisite labs in the building, we would like our Uppsala school to establish a special profile in natural science, beyond of course English!
The central pillars of what we offer our students are:
1. To command the English language - the key to the world. Up to half of our teaching is in English, performed by well qualified native English speaking teachers.
2. A safe and orderly environment, where teachers can teach and students learn.
3. High academic expectations.
IES results on the national tests in English, Swedish and Math are far above average for Swedish schools.
Our schools are approved by Skolinspektionen and follow the Swedish curriculum. There are no fees to attend our schools. In compliance with the school law, we base admission on the principle of first come, first served. An early application provides a more favorable position in the queue. Applications are made via our web site: www.engelska.se.
We very much look forward to starting Internationella Engelska Skolan in Uppsala.
Best Regards
